I do not believe in buy-and-hold anymore, because as you have said, they may not go up substantially for many years.
Many stocks are now at historical lows.
I buy on the dips and sell 5% to 10% higher and keep turning my stocks and take profits off the table nearly every day. Beats buying a stock and then hoping/praying that will go up over the next year.
