NYMX News Nymox Pursuing New Approaches to an Old Disease
HASBROUCK HEIGHTS, N.J.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nymox Pharmaceutical Corporation (NASDAQ:NYMX) is taking innovative and
unique approaches to the diagnosis and treatment of Alzheimer's disease.
It is widely recognized that new methods of treating and diagnosing
Alzheimer's disease are urgently needed in the face of an impending
world-wide epidemic of Alzheimer’s disease.
Currently, an estimated 4.5 million Americans and more than 15 million
people around the world suffer from the disease. By 2050, this number is
expected to triple, creating enormous burdens on health-care systems,
care-givers and communities.
Nymox’s AD drug development programs focus on
novel proprietary approaches to the diagnosis and treatment of Alzheimer’s
disease. One such program targets spherons, tiny balls of densely packed
protein found in the human brain and believed by Nymox scientists to be
a major cause of senile plaques. Senile plaques are found abundantly in
the brains of patients with Alzheimer’s
disease and are believed by many researchers to play a pivotal role in
the fatal illness. Nymox has used spheron-based drug screening methods
to discover, develop and test unique drug candidates aimed at limiting
the formation of Alzheimer plaques from spherons and thus slowing or
stopping the progression of the disease.
Another Nymox AD program targets neural thread protein (NTP), the brain
protein measured by AlzheimAlert™, the Company’s
urine based diagnostic aid for AD. AlzheimAlert™
is currently available in Europe as a kit with the CE Mark and in the US
as a CLIA certified clinical reference laboratory test service. Nymox
has developed new drug candidates designed to inhibit the effects of
over-production of NTP in the AD brain.
Nymox’s product development programs are
supported by an extensive worldwide patent portfolio encompassing a wide
range of products, drug candidates and targets. Currently Nymox and its
subsidiaries own or have licensed exclusive rights to several hundred
patents and patent applications in the U.S. and other countries around
the world.
