FCL News Foundation Coal and Personal Contributors Donate $500,000 to Local Summit School

LINTHICUM HEIGHTS, Md.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 8, 2006--Foundation Coal Holdings, Inc. (NYSE:FCL) today presented Anne Arundel County's Summit School with a combined endowment gift consisting of company and personal contributions. The total amount donated was $500,000 and is intended to assist the school with its long-term sustainability. Foundation Coal Corporation's chief executive officer, James F. Roberts, and several company employees presented the check to the school's executive director, Dr. Jane R. Snider with Governor Robert L. Ehrlich in attendance. According to Snider, "Foundation Coal is leading the corporate community by recognizing that bright children with learning challenges can make a significant contribution to society."

"We believe that a fundamental responsibility of Foundation Coal is to support local institutions that provide exceptional service to the community. As a major Maryland employer, Foundation Coal is proud to be investing in this community partner and its future. This donation will enhance the education of our children and will help the school offer more scholarships as well as enhance faculty benefits to sustain the best and brightest educators in the field," stated Roberts.

Founded in 1989 and recipient of the National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence, Summit is a coed, nonprofit institution for bright students in grades 1-8 with learning challenges. Summit integrates evidenced-based strategies to help each student reach their potential, and to remediate reading and written language challenges. The school provides a dynamic and supportive educational environment to enrich each student's academic success. Through programs tailored to individual learning styles, multi-sensory approaches are used to develop each child's strengths. Graduating nearly 400 students in the school's 17 year history, the hallmark of the school's success has been the extensive teacher training that keeps its professionals abreast of current research to guide their teaching with best practices in special education.

Foundation Coal is ranked in the top five of the nation's largest coal producers. The company has been in the business of mining and selling coal through its predecessor companies for decades. Through its subsidiaries, Foundation produces diverse coal products, keeping the direct household energy costs of coal-fueled electricity at a third less than the average cost of electricity generated by oil or natural gas. In 2006 and beyond, Foundation Coal will produce enough tons of coal to support roughly 17.4 million American household electricity needs.

Governor Ehrlich offered praise by stating, "I congratulate Foundation Coal on its philanthropy and its recognition of the limitless potential of Maryland's students. Community based partnerships enrich schools like the Summit School, and make Maryland a better place in which to learn."

Foundation Coal Holdings, Inc., through its affiliates, is a major U.S. coal producer with 14 coal mines and related facilities in several states including Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Illinois, and Wyoming. Through its subsidiaries, Foundation Coal employs approximately 3,000 people and produces approximately 70 million tons annually, largely for utilities generating electricity. Foundation's corporate offices are in Linthicum Heights, MD.
