LINTHICUM HEIGHTS, Md.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Foundation Coal Holdings, Inc. (NYSE:FCL) announced the expansion of its core Business Development group with two appointments, effective January 1, 2007. Brian L. Miller will assume the role of vice president business development, and Jeffrey D. Mueller will serve as manager business development. Miller will report to James A. Olsen, senior vice president of development and information technology and Mueller will report to Miller.

In his new role, Miller will be responsible for determining the potential and feasibility of investment opportunities regarding acquisitions, new ventures, investments in properties and technologies, and other corporate development initiatives. He will play an integral part in identifying and implementing company growth strategies.

According to Miller, “I am excited about the opportunity to use my financial and strategic background in the mining and energy industries to make a significant contribution to Foundation Coal’s growth program. Although relatively young as a public entity, Foundation has successfully demonstrated the ability to leverage its operational strengths in conjunction with a commitment to making disciplined investment decisions. I envision strong acceptance by the financial community of the company’s initiatives in coal and coal-related technologies.”

An industry veteran with 20 years of experience, Miller is transitioning from his prior role as a consultant to Foundation Coal since June 2006. Prior to this he held the position of vice president of finance and acquisitions for DTE Coal Services located in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Prior to that he worked as Director of Business Development for Cyprus Amax Minerals Company and Cyprus Amax Coal Company and worked in various capacities in business development, planning and finance for The Pittston Company. Miller earned an MBA in Finance and Accounting from Columbia University, a Master of Public Policy degree from the University of California and received a Bachelors degree from Columbia College in Urban Studies/Political Science.

Mueller’s new position will focus on the implementation of overall business development initiatives while providing a full breadth of expertise in engineering and operational assessments.

Mueller has amassed 31 years of mining engineering experience. Most recently he served at Foundation Coal affiliate, Warrick Holding Company as manager operations, idle properties conducting oversight for the final reclamation and property development related to the former Ayrshire and Delta mines. He joined Amax Coal Company in 1976 as a resident engineer in training and worked in various engineering positions within the company at locations in Indiana and Illinois. Mueller earned an MBA in Operations Management from Indiana University’s Indianapolis campus and holds a Bachelors of Science in Civil Engineering from the Rose Hulman Institute of Technology.

“I am very pleased to announce these two appointments,” stated Jim Olsen. “Brian and Jeff’s experience in the coal industry will serve to support Foundation Coal’s corporate growth as the company proceeds with a vigorous program to identify both traditional and forward-looking business opportunities.”
