NSE News Red Cross Red Crescent Anti-Malaria Campaign Transmitted Live Via New Skies' NSS-7 Satellite
THE HAGUE, The Netherlands--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 22, 2005--
New Skies Satellites donates satellite capacity enabling the Red Cross Red Crescent to broadcast TV publicity for massive anti-malaria campaign live from Niger to TV stations across Europe and North America
New Skies Satellites B.V. (NYSE:NSE), the global satellite communications company, today announced it has donated satellite transmission services for the broadcast of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies anti-malaria campaign from Niger to various television outlets across Europe and the US. The December 19th live television broadcast was part of a massive International Federation campaign, where more than 2 million mosquito nets have been distributed, to ensure every child under five years old, approximately 3.5 million children in total, will be protected against the disease. Dubbed as the "world's biggest Christmas gift", the campaign aims to fight malaria in the West African nation through the use of mosquito nets.
The International Federation has used the donated capacity on New Skies' NSS-7 satellite to provide live shots featuring various International Federation spokespeople and footage of the campaign direct from Niger, free of charge to thousands of television stations all over the world, such as the BBC, ITN, Canada's CBC and CTV, Japan's NHK and Swedish STV. The live broadcast is an innovative way for the International Federation to capture greater television publicity by using Ku-band flyaway satellite equipment to promote their aid campaigns to donor audiences. New Skies has provided the International Federation with Ku-band satellite capacity on its NSS-7 West Africa beam, which will then be turned-around at New Skies' Washington Mediaport for distribution on NSS-7's North America and Europe beams.
Rosemarie North, spokesperson for the International Federation said "The International Federation is grateful to New Skies Satellites for donating satellite capacity on its NSS-7 satellite to help us publicize and bring more attention to the fight against Malaria in Niger. Thanks to New Skies, we were able to take a novel approach by offering free, live TV feeds directly from Niger to broadcasters in Europe and North America."
Scott Sprague, Senior Vice President, Global Sales at New Skies Satellites, said "New Skies was pleased to support the Red Cross in its anti-malaria campaign by donating satellite capacity on NSS-7. New Skies' satellites are often involved with supporting various relief, development and aid projects by providing affordable and reliable voice, internet and media services in developing nations. New Skies' contribution of satellite communication services to the Red Cross is further demonstration of our ongoing commitment in assisting these nations' communications needs."
New Skies Satellites offers occasional use capacity across its fleet of five satellites: NSS-806 (319.5(degree) E) and NSS-7 (338(degree) E) in the Atlantic Ocean Region; NSS-703 (57(degree) E) in the Indian Ocean region; NSS-6 (95(degree) E) in the heart of the Asia Pacific Region; and NSS-5 (183(degree) E) in the Pacific Ocean region.
