CERP News Cereplast and Innovia Support the Biodegradable Products Institute at the US Composting Council 2007 Annual Meeting
HAWTHORNE, Calif. & SMYRNA, Ga.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Cereplast™, Inc. (OTCBB:CERP) and Innovia
Films, Inc. today announced that they will jointly support the
Biodegradable Products Institute (BPI) Zero Waste event held January
23rd during the US Composting Council 2007 annual meeting. Cereplast is
a producer of proprietary bio-resins used to manufacture food service
ware, while Innovia Films is a producer of NatureFlex™
regenerated cellulose biodegradable packaging films.
Products from both Cereplast and Innovia Films have been certified by
BPI as meeting the ASTM D6400 standard for biodegradability, a
prerequisite to sponsoring the event. The cutlery produced by a
Louisville (KY) injection molder using Cereplast resin will be wrapped
in a NatureFlex film from Innovia Films, making the entire cutlery set
biodegradable and compostable. Cereplast bio-resins are formulated from
a patented and proprietary manufacturing process that incorporates
various starches and other biodegradable components. Cereplast offers 12
grades of resin starch or PLA based for applications in injection
molding, thermoforming, extrusion blow molding and extrusion coating.
The Cereplast resin grade used to make the cutlery does include PLA from
NatureWorks® LLC.
“We are pleased to combine forces with Innovia
Films to introduce a fully compostable cutlery set,”
said Frederic Scheer, Cereplast CEO. “This
event, showcasing our resin and its application is a perfect venue to
promote the positive strides made by so many companies in our industry
to produce biodegradable and compostable packaging.”
Aside from cutlery, the Cereplast resin has been used to produce a full
line of biodegradable food service ware which includes hot and cold cup,
various plate and bowl sizes as well as hinged containers.
All items from the Zero Waste event will be gathered and taken to a
local composting site. Those items include food scraps, cutlery, plates,
bowls, and cups which will all be collected in compostable bags. The
recyclable products will be collected separately, and taken for
recycling, ensuring a Zero Waste event.
