CYDY News CytoDyn Shows U.S. Senate Field Rep That HIV/AIDS is Still a Serious Problem in America
TORONTO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 17, 2006--At the suggestion of CytoDyn, Inc. (OTCBB:CYDY), Joe Trujillo, a senior field representative for U.S. Senator Pete Domenici (R-NM), spent a portion of his summer vacation at the XVI World AIDS Conference held in Toronto from August 12 through August 16, 2006. Trujillo met with several of the U.S. citizens who continue to suffer from the cancers, opportunistic infections, and other medical conditions that characterize AIDS despite much progress in treating the disease.
"Although the devastating impact of AIDS in the developing nations remains a global health crisis, I have learned firsthand that we should not lose sight of our own citizens, many of whom still suffer significantly from this serious disease," Trujillo said.
The advent of effective treatment has transformed HIV/AIDS into a chronic, manageable disease, rather than the death sentence it used to be. However, even these chronic, manageable diseases, which include systemic lupus erythematosus, diabetes, and scleroderma, impair quality of life, require ongoing health care costs, and can ultimately shorten life expectancy, according to Allen D. Allen, CEO of CytoDyn. "Trivializing AIDS in those nations where antiretroviral drugs are widely available only encourages people to engage in risky behavior," Allen said. "Public health officials, educators, parents, clergy, and the press need to warn the public that HIV/AIDS is still too big a price to pay for instant gratification," Allen added.
CytoDyn was at the XVI World AIDS Conference to present the encouraging clinical data from a Phase I(a)/II(b) study of Cytolin(R), an immune therapy which reconstitutes the human immune system in order to knock down the AIDS virus. This avoids toxic effects on the liver and does not put evolutionary pressure on the virus to mutate to a drug resistant strain.
