EXBY News Exabyte's VXA-320 Wins OEM Deal with Fujitsu Siemens Computers; Win Adds to Recent Analyst News That Exabyte is Now the Clear Market Share Leader in Entry-Level Tape Automation

BOULDER, Colo.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 8, 2005--VXA continues on its worldwide roll. At the same time as a recent IDC report shows VXA as the clear market share leader in entry-level tape automation, Exabyte Corporation (OTCBB: EXBY), the leading innovator in tape backup, restore, and archival systems, today announced that Fujitsu Siemens Computers has selected its two showcase VXA-320 products -- the VXA-320 Packet Drive and the VXA-320 PacketLoader 1x10 -- to market and sell to small and medium-sized enterprises in its global customer base. Fujitsu Siemens Computers will offer the products as the FibreCAT TXV and FibreCAT TX10 PacketLoader, respectively. Fujitsu Siemens Computers will display these products at VISIT European Forum 2005, November 9 and 10, in Augsburg, Germany. VXA is Exabyte's patented tape format that utilizes discreet digital data packets rather than traditional linear tracks resulting in dramatically enhanced data reliability.

Exabyte's SMB-Class Automation Takes Top Spot in Entry-Level Market

Concurrent with Fujitsu Siemens Computers' agreement to add Exabyte's third-generation VXA to its product mix, a report from IDC provides market data that showcases VXA's rapid market growth. "The IDC Worldwide Tape QView, October 2005" documents Exabyte's market leadership position in the entry-level tape automation market. The report indicates that as of the end of the second quarter of 2005, Exabyte is the clear market leader in this sector with a 38% market share (in revenue), nearly twice that of the nearest competitor. IDC defines low-end (entry-level) automation as primarily autoloaders with the following technologies imbedded inside: VXA, DDS/DAT, DLT VS, AIT-1/2 and SLR.

"VXA market share continues to grow worldwide," said Tom Ward, president and CEO, Exabyte. "With the release of our third-generation products, VXA-320's capacity and speed is now two full generations ahead of DDS -- with the added reliability benefits of VXA Packet Technology. Our close relationships with major OEMs, such as Fujitsu Siemens Computers, have helped us reach this market share leadership position, and we expect the strong adoption trend to continue."

Fujitsu Siemens Computers Adds Third-Generation VXA to its Product Mix

The FibreCAT TXV Tape Drive with VXA Packet Technology offers up to 320 GB capacity and 24 MB per second data transfer, double the capacity and speed of the prior VXA generation. Well suited for desktop publishing, audio production, database management, video production or general hard drive backup protection, the FibreCAT TXV is the ideal solution for professional as well as home use. The FibreCAT TXV is also compatible with VXA-2.

The FibreCAT TX10 PacketLoader provides reliable, low-cost automated backup for small and midsized businesses or remote offices with limited IT staff. The sleek 1u, rack-mountable unit offers one VXA-320 drive and 10 cartridge slots for a capacity up to 320 TB. And it's fast -- up to 86.4 GB transfer speed per hour. The FibreCAT TX10 provides four times the speed and capacity of a DAT-72 and DDS-5 tape. Thanks to its tapes' long lifetime -- they can be re-used at least 500 times -- the FibreCAT TX10 PacketLoader has the lowest lifetime cost per Gigabyte. VXA tapes are extremely durable and their data integrity is 180 times higher than that of other competing tape technologies, ensuring reliable data restores even from a damaged tape. The FibreCAT TX10 PacketLoader is fully self-sufficient making it ideal for locations where limited or no IT staff is present, and its field-replaceable drive allows for easy upgrade to future generations of VXA. The FibreCAT TX10 PacketLoader comes with many extras at no extra cost, such as a built-in bar code reader, which makes media management easier, and an Ethernet port for convenient remote management.

"Secure data storage is key to success for small and medium-sized enterprises as well," explains Dr. Helmut Beck, Vice President Storage at Fujitsu Siemens Computers. "Nevertheless, many such enterprises provide inadequate protection against data loss. With the FibreCAT TX10 PacketLoader, which is based on VXA Packet Technology and geared specifically to the requirements of this market segment, customers are able to save and restore their strategically important data in a professional manner. In addition to being extremely robust, the device is impressive in terms of ease of operation, automation and flexibility of maintenance -- and all this at a reasonable price. The new FibreCAT TX10 PacketLoader is an ideal addition to our storage portfolio for small and medium-sized enterprises."

All VXA-320 products delivers full read and write compatibility with VXA's second generation, protecting the investment of users who have already stepped up to the VXA platform. With VXA-320, customers can use their same VXA-2 tapes and immediately realize twice the capacity and speed. And only VXA offers three different cartridge sizes (320/160/80 GB), providing users the flexibility to choose the capacity that best meets their current storage and budget needs and giving VXA-320 users a clear price-per-gigabyte advantage over the DDS/DAT format.

This announcement follows Exabyte's launch of VXA's third-generation products on October 4, 2005, and the formation of the VXA Alliance, announced on October 12, 2005. The VXA Alliance, which includes charter members Imation, Matsushita Electric Industrial, Ltd. (Panasonic), Sony, TDK, and Exabyte, is a tape storage industry group focused on providing information and education to the marketplace on the benefits of the VXA Packet Tape format and advocating for the continued global adoption of VXA.
