HESG News Shugr Orders Mounting at Its Distributor, DNP International
LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 7, 2005--Health Sciences Group, Inc. (OTCBB:HESG), provider of innovative nutraceutical products and functional food ingredients derived from natural sources, announced today that it will be increasing shipments of Shugr(TM) to its raw material distributor, DNP International Co., Inc., to meet growing demand. DNP International is a leading importer and distributor of raw materials to manufacturers in the food, beverage and nutritional supplement industries, among others.
"We are extremely pleased to see increasing orders for Shugr placed through our distributor DNP," said Fred E. Tannous, Co-chairman and CEO of Health Sciences Group, Inc. "We believe Shugr offers significant sales potential as an ingredient in foods and beverages. Since exhibiting at the International Food Technology (IFT) Expo in July, DNP has generated an increasing amount of enthusiasm and interest in Shugr from many food and beverage manufacturers looking for a zero-calorie, diabetic-safe sweetener for their products. DNP is doing a tremendous job converting this interest into orders."
DNP is currently fulfilling orders placed by manufacturers of beverages, foods, and nutritional supplements.
"Shugr definitely fits with our functional ingredient offer expansion," said David Ji, President of DNP International. "We are getting prepared for a growing number of Shugr orders over the coming months. We believe that Shugr will strengthen our position of leader in the ingredient and raw material industry."
"Based on feedback from attendees of the IFT Expo, we found very strong interest from beverage manufacturers, followed by food manufacturers, in using Shugr as a zero-calorie sweetening alternative," said Isabelle Mauras, DNP Marketing. "Many manufacturers are impressed with the taste of Shugr which is hardly differentiable from real sugar and has excellent baking properties."
Shugr is a natural, zero-calorie sweetener made from sugars that occur naturally in such good-tasting, healthy foods such as fruits, vegetables, corn and dairy products. Erythritol is a naturally-occurring sugar commonly found in melon, grapes, mushrooms and soy. Tagatose comes from dairy products, but does not affect people who are lactose intolerant. Tagatose also provides an added health benefit -- prebiotic fiber that promotes intestinal health, much the way yogurt does. Maltodextrin is derived from corn sugar, which is non-GMO and gluten-free. A trace amount of sucralose is added to give Shugr its "high note." All of these ingredients carry a GRAS (Generally Recognized As Safe) designation for food safety from the US Food & Drug Administration. Shugr does not contain any aspartame, neotame, saccharin, fructose, high fructose corn syrup, acesulfame-K, cane sugar, honey or stevia.
"Because of its great taste, natural profile, GRAS-certified ingredients, low glycemic index and excellent baking qualities, Shugr is expected to become the sweetener of choice for many manufacturers who seek a natural, zero-calorie replacement for cane sugar or other sweeteners in their diet and diabetic-friendly products," commented said Loren Miles, Vice President of Marketing, Swiss Research, Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Health Sciences Group.
Today, DNP International is the only ingredient distributor of Shugr in North America. In addition to Shugr (equivalent to the sweetness of cane sugar per serving), DNP also offers Shugr in formulations designed for ingredient applications: Shugr 5X (five times the sweetness of cane sugar per serving) and Shugr 10X (ten times the sweetness of cane sugar per serving).
