VCST News New ViewCast Solution Enables Simple, Cost-Effective Streaming of Multiple Feeds for Traffic Monitoring and Reporting
PLANO, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)--ViewCast Corporation (OTCBB: VCST), a leading global provider of
high-quality audio and video communication products, today announced
that it has developed a flexible and cost-effective IP-based solution
for video streaming and archiving of material from public safety
cameras. The company’s Niagara®
7224 streaming media encoder is designed specifically to enable
organizations such as municipal transit authorities to deliver live
traffic video to public service agencies and local residents over the
Internet in Windows Media®
and RealVideo®
formats using industry-standard IP technology.
“The IP-based video surveillance market
reached $227 million in 2005 and is rapidly expanding,”
noted Dave Stoner, president and COO of ViewCast Corporation. “Initial
projections indicate demand for IP video surveillance equipment is
expected to grow by 40 percent during the next 5 years. Uniquely suited
for traffic surveillance, the Niagara 7224 encoder will be marketed to
government agencies and consulting firms, across the U.S.”
"Typical installations for video streaming and archiving of content
acquired with public safety cameras are flawed in that they are
proprietary and equipment-dependent, which means that such video may be
distributed only to those viewers with matching playback systems and
cannot be viewed by the general public," said Stoner. “Our
Niagara-based solution encodes up to eight feeds over the Internet in
Windows Media® and RealVideo®
using industry-standard IP technology, and provides software control,
local or networked, to simplify management and monitoring of all those
simultaneous streams. With this capability municipal organizations can
alleviate roadway congestion by making traffic issues known to the
public and to the officials responsible for dealing with such matters."
The new Niagara 7224 from ViewCast features two Dual-Core Intel®
Xeon® processors and
two integrated Osprey®-440
four-channel video- and audio-capture cards providing eight audio and
video inputs per installed system. The Niagara 7224 more than doubles
rack density for multi-channel streaming installations and provides a
very attractive cost per channel. Multiple Niagara encoders can be
combined on a single network to support an unlimited number of feeds,
all under the control of ViewCast Niagara SCX®
encoder management software.
In practical applications, traffic cameras are linked to the ViewCast
Niagara 7224 encoding system, which in turn streams content to the Web
for public viewing and/or delivers content to a rack-mount Niagara
server for archiving as a Windows Media or RealVideo stream or as AVI
files or Flash video. Also included with the system is ViewCast’s
Osprey SimulStream®
software which allows a single input feed to be split out and encoded as
a Windows Media Stream and as a RealVideo stream. The resulting media
can be delivered over an Ethernet connection for internal viewing via PC
or video display, or it can be accessed externally via the Internet by
PC or Mac, through wireless connection by mobile devices such as PDAs
and smartphones, or even on terminals in first-responder vehicles.
"The new Niagara 7224 encoder offers unified control over multiple feeds
encoded in just one box, giving municipal transit authorities an
easy-to-use, space- and cost-saving solution for handling the
ever-increasing burden of traffic management," added Mr. Stoner. "The
system is modular and infinitely scalable, so it can grow along with the
city infrastructure and traffic-monitoring needs.”
