DESC News Linde to Market Proton's On-Site Hydrogen Generating Systems in Europe & South America

WALLINGFORD, Conn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 11, 2006--Proton Energy Systems, a subsidiary of Distributed Energy Systems Corp. (Nasdaq: DESC), announced today that it signed an agreement for Linde AG, Linde Gas Division to market and distribute its advanced on-site hydrogen generating systems in Europe and South America.

Under terms of the relationship between the two companies, Linde will extend distribution of Proton's HOGEN(R) on site generation systems, marketing the fuel-cell-based hydrogen technology to utilities and laboratory and analytical customers in most countries in Europe and South America. The new agreement expands the marketing and distribution alliance first established last summer by Proton with Linde Gas for the North American, Mexican and Caribbean markets.

Cliff Caldwell, general manager for specialty gases and chemicals at Linde Gas, states: "Now that Linde has seen, first-hand, the benefits of Proton's advanced systems for making ultra-pure hydrogen right at customer sites, we look forward to widening and deepening penetration of those markets. There is a large opportunity for this product line, especially among utilities needing to be more efficient energy producers, as well as for other hydrogen users who are located too remotely to be easily and economically served by trucked-in supplies of this vital gas."

Proton's HOGEN(R) on site hydrogen generators produce pure hydrogen from electricity and water without harmful by-products. The innovative technology provides constant hydrogen flow to electric utility applications, cooling the electric generator casing and increasing power plants efficiencies, as well as cost and energy savings. In addition, hydrogen is used in many other industrial applications, and in research laboratories requiring ultra-pure gases and chemicals for critical scientific and developmental purposes.

Mark Murray, Proton Energy's president, pointed to the new distribution agreement as another important step in widening the acceptance of on-site hydrogen generation. He said: "Moving forward in our relationship with Linde to new regions of the world reflects the significant performance advantages of our approach to supplying pure hydrogen to a large and growing market. This proven technology will help to support Linde's important strategic focus on the power generation market, especially in high-demand environments in Europe and throughout South America."
